The clockwork SpitJack is the real deal.
Modeled after original "clockjack" designs (http://www.ballandball-us.com/spitjack.html) used
in Europe and colonial America, this charming, rustic machine gives an authentic
feel of what it must have been like when the fireplace was the home's main
cooking appliance. Although it takes more of an effort to operate (you must
rewind the clock spring every 17-25 minutes), has less of a cooking capacity,
makes more noise than the electric model (there is a little bell that rings to
warn you when the spin time is running down), and is more expensive,
we still consider it our favorite.
The 6C Model is the largest we
sell and one of the most powerful available. It is recommended for either a
special use (suckling pigs or large turkeys) or for an oversized fireplace (at
least 48" wide). It comes with an extra thick spit (10mm square stock) for a
heavy-duty load.

Optional Accessories:
We
would certainly recommend something to set under the cooking food to
protect your hearth from the fats and juices that will drip. You could use some
tin foil (not really) or a baking pan or cookie sheet and they will work.
However if you want the convenience and ease of integrated design (a good fit)
and a nice handle to help adjust position and transport the final product,
consider one of our drip pans. They are a bit fancy and pricey, but there is
nothing else like them to do the job right.
The
stainless pan (above) has hand wrought hardware and a stainless pan. The
copper pan (left) is a genuine, heirloom quality, heavy-duty, hand-hammered
copper pan, rolled-edge, tin lined (so you can cook in it) with a hand wrought
handle and fastened with copper rivets.
You could also consider a
flat basket for cooking steaks and chops or one of our
triple spinning
spits for kabobs or small birds.
